Born in civil war, they have never been called upon to fight against an external enemy but have nevertheless established a formidable reputation in international peacekeeping, both under the auspices of the United Nations and more recently the Partnership for Peace. The Irish Army, Naval Service and Air Corps, although they maintain distinct identities, underlined by different uniforms and rank structures, form a single entity. This brief study however deals only with the Army of which it does not pretend to be a comprehensive history merely seeking to trace the sometimes bewildering changes in its organization and equipment by means of a series of tables and appendices, with linking explanatory text. In order to do so it is however necessary to understand something of the historical and political and economic background which shaped its development. In doing so it will be assumed that the majority of the readers of this short work will be non-Irish and unfamiliar with the course of Irish history.
